The brief in brief

Take our Dragons' Den pitch and turn it into an ad. Use the episode audio and clips however you like, animate around them, and show what SmartyPlants actually does.

Ben Beavers, founder of SmartyPlants
  1. Hook hard. The Dragons are the obvious opener: five famous investors arguing about whether anyone would pay £30 to keep a plant alive.
  2. Answer the objections. The Dragons raise real doubts (price, “I'd just use Google”, “this won't change behaviour”). The ad should let those land, then show why they are wrong.
  3. Show the product in action. Sensor in the soil, live data on the phone, a plant that lives.
  4. Keep it evergreen. SmartyPlants want to run this for a long time, so avoid anything that dates it (no “as seen last night”, no series numbers).
  5. Your style, your call. Animation, mixed media, motion graphics, live clips, any blend. They want creative expression, not a template.

Format, length and aspect ratio are open. The one thing SmartyPlants require is a social-first vertical (9:16) version. If you also want a 16:9 cut for the IMAX, great, but the vertical version is the one they need.

The problem

“Every 18 months, half of us kill five.”

Ben, in the pitch, at 01:14

The UK is a nation of houseplant lovers: nearly half of us buy them every year. The care label on the pot gives generic advice, but every room is different, and most people simply don't know what their plant is actually experiencing.

About SmartyPlants

A WiFi-connected plant monitor and app that tells you exactly what your houseplant needs, so you stop killing them.

The product

A small sensor sits in the soil and measures five things:

  • Light
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Soil moisture
  • Soil nutrients

It sends live data to the SmartyPlants app, which turns readings into tailored, plain-English recommendations (water now, move closer to the window, feed next week). Customers name their plants in the app: the Dragons spotted “Hannah Hedera” and “Finlay Ficus” on screen.

Where they are now

Over 10,000 units shipped to customers in more than 49 countries. UK-based, sold direct at smartyplants.co.uk.

The origin story, if you want it

Ben's partner wanted a green oasis in the living room but had killed every houseplant she'd ever owned. That line is in the pre-pitch interview (00:09) and is a nice human way in.

What sets it apart

WiFi, not Bluetooth, so it works when your phone is out of the room. A rechargeable battery. And an app that interprets the readings rather than showing raw numbers.

What they want you to make

An ad that makes a plant lover think “that's me” and want one.

Something SmartyPlants can run as paid social and on their own channels for months, built from the Den footage and audio.

Objective
Make plant lovers want a SmartyPlants sensor and send them to smartyplants.co.uk.
Audience
People who love houseplants and keep losing them. Susie Ma describes the customer perfectly at 06:43 to 07:18: 20 or 30 plants, a few she is really attached to, happy to spend £20 to £30 to keep those alive.
Tone
Warm, witty, confident. SmartyPlants are not defensive about the Den: three Dragons made offers and they accepted Steven's.
Should include
The product in use (sensor in soil, app on phone), the SmartyPlants name, and a clear end card with smartyplants.co.uk.
App screens
Don't use the app images from the episode on screen. SmartyPlants are sending updated app images to use instead.

The hook

Open on the Dragons. Three options from SmartyPlants: pick one, or find a better one.

“I buy a plant for £10. I'm going to pay another £30 just to protect it?”
Touker Suleyman. Then the answer.

The Dragons' Den material

Thirteen minutes of pitch. Let the doubts land, then answer them.

Timestamps are minutes and seconds from the start of the video file SmartyPlants supply. A full line-by-line transcript comes with it.

Who is in the room

Ben Beavers, the founder, pitching. Dragons: Deborah Meaden, Peter Jones, Touker Suleyman, Steven Bartlett and guest Dragon Susie Ma. Narrator: Evan Davis.

How it plays out

Ben asks for £50,000 for 3%. Peter and Deborah go out on price and behaviour change. Touker offers £50k for 15%, Susie £50k for 10%, Steven £50k for 10% plus a further £50k for 5% at production. Ben accepts Steven's offer.

The objections, and how to answer them

Tap a doubt to see the answer.

03:42Deborah Meaden“There's a little sticker on the back that says all of this... what's this giving me over and above?”
The answer

The sticker is generic. Your room is not. The sensor reads what is actually happening to that plant, in that spot, right now. (Ben, 04:04)

04:51Touker Suleyman“I buy a plant for £10. I'm going to pay another £30 just to protect it. Does that make commercial sense?”
The answer

It isn't about what the plant cost. It's about the plants you care about: the one you've nursed for years, the one from a friend, the one in your living room you'd be gutted to lose. Most plant lovers have a few of those. (Ben, 05:15; Susie, 06:53)

05:48Peter Jones“If you've got 20 plants... you love your plants, and you know how to look after them. So you're not going to buy this product.”
The answer

Susie, who has 20 to 30 plants, immediately disagrees on camera (06:43). Loving plants is not the same as knowing what they need.

06:19Peter Jones“There are a load of products out there already that do the moisture testing.”
The answer

A moisture meter gives you a number. SmartyPlants tells you what to do about it. (Ben, 06:26)

06:33Peter Jones“If I've got to go on your app, I'd just use Google.”
The answer

Google doesn't know your plant is sitting in a draught next to a radiator. Live data does. (Susie, 06:39: “This is giving you live data, live feedback.”)

08:06Deborah Meaden“It is going to become a little bit of a disposable, non-used product that gets bought once.”
The answer

10,000+ sensors in 50+ countries and real reviews from people whose plants are still alive. Let the customers answer this one.

08:40Deborah Meaden“I'm not sure it's going to drive change.”
The answer

Knowing why is what changes behaviour. The app doesn't just diagnose, it tells you what to do today.

Lines worth building around

  • 00:32

“Maybe it's for people like me who absolutely love plants but kill them all the time.”

Susie Ma. The customer, defined by a Dragon before Ben even walks in.

  • 01:14

“Every 18 months, half of us kill five.”

Ben. The stat. Short, surprising, animatable.

  • 01:30

“Our smart sensors measure what a plant needs, from light, temperature and humidity, and in the soil, moisture and nutrients.”

Ben. The clearest product explanation in the pitch.

  • 02:00

“...turn a nation of serial plant killers into the green-fingered plant parents they were always meant to be.”

Ben. The mission line. Good end-card voiceover.

  • 06:39

“But this makes it much easier. This is giving you live data, live feedback.”

Susie Ma. A Dragon selling the product for them.

  • 07:09

“Those are the plants that I want to keep alive, and I would very happily spend £30, £20 on a device that is going to keep those guys alive.”

Susie Ma. The price objection answered by a Dragon.

  • 07:40

    “I think it's clearly inventive, it's a great product.”

Peter Jones. Praise from the Dragon who went out.

  • 10:56

“We love the idea of this being a Whoop for your weeping fig.”

    Ben. The positioning line.

  • 11:51

“I think you're really, really investable.”

    Steven Bartlett. Credibility.

  • 13:16

“With Steven Bartlett's backing, he's created the ideal conditions to help his business truly flourish.”

Narrator. A tidy pun for a closing beat.

Practical notes

Things to avoid.

  • Anything that dates the ad: series, episode, broadcast date, “as seen on TV last night”.
  • Claims SmartyPlants can't stand up. Stick to what is said in the Den, what is on their website, and what customers say in their reviews.
  • Putting words in the Dragons' mouths. Cut and re-order freely, but don't make them say things they didn't.
  • Colours or fonts outside the brand palette for anything SmartyPlants-branded. The creative around it is yours.
  • The app images from the episode. Use the updated app screens SmartyPlants are sending instead.

SmartyPlants intend to run the finished ad on their own paid social and owned channels. If your ad is chosen, please deliver a master at full resolution plus any social cuts you make, with project files if you are willing to share them.

Read this before you enter. Two ads are chosen. The prize money buys SmartyPlants rights in those two ads, and in nothing else.

  • They can use, edit and publish it anywhere, for as long as they like, with no credit.

  • You keep the right to show it in your portfolio and showreel, for good.

Everyone else

Yours

  • Your ad stays yours. SmartyPlants get no rights in it.
  • If they want to use it, they need a separate agreement with you.
  • You can show it in your portfolio. Because it is built on their brand, you can't sell or license it to anyone else.
  1. Our judges pick five. They score every entry and send SmartyPlants their top five.
  2. SmartyPlants pick two. They choose the winner and the runner-up from those five.

If you share a workflow or template publicly, keep SmartyPlants' logo, footage and other material out of it.

How to enter

  • SmartyPlants' name, logo, footage and other brand material stay theirs. You can use them to make your entry and to show it in your portfolio, and for nothing else.
  • Keep SmartyPlants' material out of any workflow or template you share publicly.
